The Shotgun/Rifle test determines the ability of an insulator to sustain 50% of
its mechanical rating while being subjected to a 22-caliber rifle fire or 12-gauge
shotgun blast from 30 feet away.
Prior to the test, samples are individually inspected and an increasing voltage
is applied until electrical flashover is reached.
We place a horizontal string of three insulators under a continuous tensile load
and fire at each from 30 feet away.
